Bay Boats for Sale in NC — Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is a bay boat?

It's a shallow-draft fishing platform built for inshore coastal water — tidal creeks, grass flats, protected sounds. The hull is designed to get shallow and stay stable while you're fishing. Redfish, speckled trout, flounder — that's the target species. Different animal from a bass boat, which is built for lakes, or an offshore boat, which needs deep-V to handle ocean swells.

What's the best bay boat for eastern North Carolina?

Depends on exactly where you fish. Customers who live on the creeks around Bath, Belhaven, or the upper Pamlico — tight water, grass, very shallow — the Carolina Skiff JLS or LS is the right call. Drafts under 10 inches. Nothing gets shallower. For guys fishing the Pamlico Sound, the Pungo River, or running toward the Cedar Island flats, the Bulls Bay 2000 or 2200 gives you more hull to handle the chop and still gets into shallow water. The NauticStar 194 BAY and 224 BAY split the difference nicely. The ALK2 21 BHX is what we put serious inshore guys in when they want to eventually run the Sound and nearshore too.

What's the difference between a bay boat and a flat-bottom skiff?

A flat-bottom skiff like a Carolina Skiff has almost no deadrise — it gets incredibly shallow and is super stable for standing and fishing, but when the Pamlico Sound kicks up, you'll feel it. Bay boats like the Bulls Bay 2000 have a modified V-hull that smooths out chop while still accessing shallow water. Neither is wrong — it comes down to where you spend most of your time on the water. Come talk to us and we'll nail it down.

How shallow can these boats actually run?

Carolina Skiff JLS and LS models run in under 8 inches on plane. Bulls Bay 2000 and 2200 run about 12 inches. NauticStar 194 BAY is around 14 inches. For reference, most of the grass flats around Wysocking Bay and the back side of the Pamlico are 12–18 inches at low tide. Know your water before you buy.
